A newly identified species of jumping spider has been discovered in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala) and parts of Karnataka, named Habrocestum swaminathani to honour Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, renowned as the architect of India’s Green Revolution.
- This is the first time the genus Habrocestum has been recorded in India.
- The spider belongs to the Salticidae family (jumping spiders), known for their excellent eyesight, agile movements, and dynamic courtship behaviours.
- Habrocestum species are typically small-sized, possess bright, forward-facing eyes for sharp vision, and rely on active hunting techniques rather than web traps.
