Sewer gas is a mixture of toxic and non-toxic gases produced by the microbial decomposition of organic matter in environments with high organic waste, stagnant water, and low oxygen. These conditions are common in sewers and septic tanks.

Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) and Its Dangers

• Appearance and Odor:
  • Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with a characteristic rotten egg smell at low concentrations.
• Health Impacts:
  • At high concentrations (>100 ppm), H₂S causes olfactory fatigue, which paralyzes the sense of smell.
  • Severe health effects include eye and respiratory irritation, chronic lung damage, and respiratory distress.
  • Prolonged exposure can cause rapid loss of consciousness and respiratory arrest, leading to death.
• Flammability:
  • H₂S is highly flammable and poses a risk of explosion in certain conditions.

Sewer Gas and Safety Concerns

• Fatalities:
  Between 2019 and 2023, 377 deaths were reported in India due to unsafe practices related to sewer and septic tank cleaning, often due to exposure to sewer gas.
• Precautionary Measures:
  Proper ventilation, protective equipment, and training for workers are essential to minimize the risks of exposure to toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide.
