INDORE AIRPORT’S ZERO-WASTE INITIATIVE

PRELIMS 

Indore Airport is set to become India’s first zero-waste airport as of December 22, 2024. It is recognized for its comprehensive waste management system focusing on sustainability.

  1. Waste Management System:
    • Includes recycling waste from planes, shops, gardens, and toilets.
    • Wet waste is converted into fertilizer to support a circular economy.
  2. 4R Principle:
    • Adheres to the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Restore.
    • Aims to minimize waste generation and maximize resource recovery, promoting environmental sustainability.
  3. Economic and Environmental Benefits:
    • Eliminates dependency on the Municipal Corporation for waste disposal.
    • Generates revenue by producing fertilizer from wet waste.
  4. Recycling Plant:
    • A 3,000-square-foot facility established for efficient waste management.
    • Plant inauguration by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjurapuram Rammohan Naidu on December 22, 2024.
  5. Passenger Traffic:
    • With the reopening of the old terminal, an increase in passenger traffic is anticipated.
    • Indore Airport ranks as the fourth-best in India for passenger facilities, surpassing airports in Delhi and Hyderabad.
  6. Collaborative Efforts:
    • Contributions from:
      • Safai Mitras (sanitation workers).
      • Indigo Airlines (CSR-funded recycling plant).
      • Airport Authority of India (AAI), Airport staff, and Indore Municipal Corporation.
    • Highlight of effective multi-stakeholder collaboration.
