Prelims – In News
Students of Hyderabad University have launched protests opposing the Telangana government’s plan to auction a 400-acre land tract known as Kancha Gachibowli, located adjacent to the university campus.
While the protesting students argue that the land belongs to the university, state authorities have rejected this assertion, claiming it is government-owned.
Ecological and Environmental Significance
Kancha Gachibowli stands out as one of the last remaining patches of urban forest within Hyderabad. This green expanse supports rich biodiversity, serving as a natural habitat for a wide array of bird species, mammals, reptiles, and is also known for its distinctive rock formations.
Role of Urban Forests
Urban forest ecosystems like Kancha Gachibowli are essential to maintaining microclimatic stability in cities. They:
- Moderate temperatures by providing shade.
- Enhance humidity levels.
- Act as natural air purifiers and carbon sinks.
- Offer vital green cover amidst growing urbanisation.
