Context:
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has launched the Matri Van initiative in Gurugram, Haryana, as a part of the broader ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign initiated in 2024.
About the Programme:
- Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam:
A tree-planting campaign encouraging individuals to plant trees in honour of their mothers, thereby linking emotional remembrance with ecological action.
Details of the Matri Van Project
- Nature of the Project:
A theme-based urban afforestation initiative aimed at creating a 750-acre forest in the Aravalli Hills along the Gurugram–Faridabad corridor. - Primary Objectives:
- Ecological restoration of the Aravalli range
- Enhancing green cover in the Delhi-NCR region
- Promoting urban biodiversity
- Collaborative Approach:
The project involves a multi-stakeholder model including participation from:- CSR initiatives
- NGOs
- Multinational Corporations (MNCs)
- Schools
- Government institutions
- Ecological Strategy:
Focus is on phasing out degraded shrubs and replacing them with long-rotation native tree species to rehabilitate the landscape and sustain biodiversity.
