Mercury drops to 20° C in city

This is the lowest day temperature recorded this winter, say weathermen For the first time this year, the mercury levels in the city plummeted by about 6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, forcing the denizens to pull their woollens out of the cupboards. After the city witnessed heavy rain triggered by Cyclone Phethai on Monday, the mercury levels read around 20 degrees Celsius by Tuesday afternoon itself, which was the lowest in this year. The cyclone made its landfall south of Kakinada on Monday and due to the prevailing low pressure, the sky remained cloudy in the city. Weathermen said that the day temperature on Tuesday was a variation of around 4 to 6 degrees from the average regular temperature. It may be remembered that the city experienced a drop in the night temperature to about 15 degrees Celsius a few days ago. ‘Cyclone effect’ “This is a common feature, associated with any cyclonic system as the low pressure prevails for at least 48 hours,” the Cyclone Warning Centre officials said. For the youth, it was the time to flaunt their fashion quotient. Many youngster were seen not only woollens but leather jackets . “Today, it feels like Araku here,” Rahul, an engineering student said. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Visakhapatnam Airport so far was on 12.9 degrees Celsius on November 30, 1970 and the lowest temperature during the winter was on 10.5 degrees Celsius on January 6, 1962.
