GS 3 – Science & Technology
Context
- Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) is considering Micro-OLED for India’s first display fabrication plant, as part of the push towards domestic electronics manufacturing & strategic tech security.
What is Micro-OLED?
- Combines OLED chemistry with micro-fabrication techniques.
- Mounting: Each pixel emitter is directly integrated onto a silicon chip → extreme miniaturisation.
- Resolution: > 4000 pixels per inch, enabling ultra-high resolution in compact displays.
- Limitation: Silicon base restricts flexibility and transparency, unlike traditional OLED.
Applications
- AR/VR headsets
- Camera viewfinders
- Defence optics (night vision, targeting systems)
- Wearables
Constraints
- Heat buildup in compact chips.
- Emitter ageing → shorter display life.
- Complex fabrication → high cost and low yields.
