Multi-Layered Air Defence System

GS 3 – SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Context:

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha. The test took place around 12:30 PM on 24 August 2025.

Key Features of IADWS
  • Nature: Multi-layered air defence system.
  • Components:
    • Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM) – indigenous.
    • Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles.
    • High-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW).
  • Functionality:
    • Engages multiple aerial threats simultaneously at different ranges and altitudes.
    • Integrates missile systems, drone detection and destruction, command & control, radars, and communication systems.
Test Details
  • Targets Engaged:
    1. Two high-speed fixed-wing UAVs.
    2. One multi-copter drone.
  • Outcome: All targets were successfully destroyed using a combination of QRSAM, VSHORADS, and laser weapons.
  • Verification: Performance confirmed via Integrated Test Range (Chandipur) instruments.
  • Witnesses: Senior DRDO scientists and armed forces representatives.
Significance
  • Strengthens India’s multi-layered air defence capabilities against UAVs, drones, and missile threats.
  • Integration of laser weapons with missile systems is a step towards futuristic defence technologies.
  • Demonstrates indigenous development of advanced weapons.
  • Supports India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat goal in defence technology.
