The Nilgiri Tahr, also known as the Nilgiri Ibex, is an endangered wild goat species endemic to the southern Western Ghats mountain range in India.
It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu.
Habitat:
Found in open montane grasslands (shola grasslands) at elevations of 1200 to 2600 meters.
Historically, their range encompassed a larger portion of the Western Ghats, but today they are restricted to scattered pockets in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Physical Characteristics
Stocky build with short, coarse fur and a bristly mane.
Males are larger and darker than females, with both sexes having curved horns.
Males’ horns can grow up to 40 cm, while females’ horns reach around 30 cm.
Nicknamed as Mountain Monarch for their surefootedness on steep cliffs.
Conservation Status
Listed as “Endangered” on the IUCN Red List.
Protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act of India, 1972.
