GS3 – Environment
Context:
A recent study has linked daily exposure to phthalates, particularly di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), to approximately 350,000 deaths worldwide due to heart disease in 2018. India accounted for the highest number of these deaths (103,587), followed by China and Indonesia.
What Are Phthalates?
Phthalates are chemicals commonly used to make plastics flexible and durable. Often called “everywhere chemicals,” they are found in a wide range of everyday products, including:
- Plastic Products: PVC pipes, vinyl flooring, garden hoses, medical tubing, rain- and stain-resistant materials, children’s toys, etc.
- Personal Care Products: Shampoos, soaps, hairsprays, perfumes, and cosmetics, where they are used to prolong fragrance.
Health Impacts of Phthalates
Phthalates can degrade into tiny particles that enter the human body through ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption. Studies have associated exposure to phthalates with several health issues, including:
- Obesity
- Fertility Problems
- Cancer
- Hormonal Disruptions
Increased Risk of Asthma and Allergies in Children
