Prelims Bits

Context:

The relics linked to Lord Buddha, originally discovered at Piprahwa, Uttar Pradesh, have been brought back to India.

Historical Significance:
  • In 1898, British engineer William Claxton Peppé unearthed a stupa in Piprahwa, believed to be one of the eight original stupas that enshrined Lord Buddha’s remains.
  • The excavation revealed a stone coffer containing:
    • Ashes and bone fragments
    • Precious offerings like gold, pearls, and gemstones
  • A Brahmi script inscription on a casket confirmed the relics belonged to Lord Buddha, placed there by his Shakya clan.
Relic Distribution:
  • Over 1,800 items were found.
  • In 1899, the Indian Museum (Kolkata) received the largest collection.
  • A portion of the bone relics was gifted by Viceroy Lord Elgin to King Rama V of Siam (Thailand).
  • A share retained by Peppé was listed for auction in 2025.
