Launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on January 24, 2025, the SANJAY Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS) enhances the operational capabilities of the Indian Army by integrating ground and aerial sensors for a comprehensive battlefield picture.
Key Features:
- Automated System: Processes data from various sensors, ensuring accuracy and preventing duplication.
- Secure Communication: Operates over the Army Data Network and Satellite Communication Network.
- Advanced Technology: Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and analytics to monitor borders and assess situations with high accuracy.
- ISR Capability: Acts as a force multiplier for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) operations.
Operational Phases: SANJAY will be deployed in three phases between March and October 2025, across all operational brigades, divisions, and corps. This period has been designated as the “Year of Reforms.”
Indigenous Development: Developed by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY aligns with the Indian Army’s focus on self-reliance (‘Aatmanirbharta’) and the “Year of Technology Absorption” initiative.
Technological Advancements: Utilizes AI and information-based techniques for real-time battlefield assessment. Collects data through voice, video, and images transmitted over secure links, supporting improved decision-making.
Importance of Surveillance: Provides a unified platform for data collection and analysis, improving response time and operational effectiveness in both conventional and sub-conventional operations.
Cost and Budget: Developed at an estimated cost of ₹2,402 crore, SANJAY reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities through advanced indigenous technology.
