Context:
India sees low awareness about scoliosis, despite it affecting around 2–3% of the population.
What is Scoliosis?
- A spinal deformity causing the spine to curve sideways, forming an ‘S’ or ‘C’ shape.
- Progressive disorder—can worsen over time if not treated.
Causes:
- Genetic predisposition
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Abnormal vertebral development
- Idiopathic (unknown origin)
Risk Groups & Symptoms:
- More common and severe in women.
- Usually starts in childhood or adolescence, but can occur at any age.
- Common signs:
- Uneven shoulders
- Rib hump
- Unsteady walking
- Back pain or difficulty breathing (in advanced cases)
Note: Scoliosis does not reduce life expectancy, but affects posture and mobility.
