Scoliosis: A Progressive Spinal Condition

Context:

India sees low awareness about scoliosis, despite it affecting around 2โ€“3% of the population.

What is Scoliosis?
  • A spinal deformity causing the spine to curve sideways, forming an โ€˜Sโ€™ or โ€˜Cโ€™ shape.
  • Progressive disorderโ€”can worsen over time if not treated.
Causes:
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Abnormal vertebral development
  • Idiopathic (unknown origin)
Risk Groups & Symptoms:
  • More common and severe in women.
  • Usually starts in childhood or adolescence, but can occur at any age.
  • Common signs:
    • Uneven shoulders
    • Rib hump
    • Unsteady walking
    • Back pain or difficulty breathing (in advanced cases)

Note: Scoliosis does not reduce life expectancy, but affects posture and mobility.
