T.N. to get monsoon rain after October 20

An upper air cyclonic circulation triggered thunderstorm activity across the city on Wednesday. Light rain may continue at a few places across the State till the weekend. Monsoon-like conditions returned to Chennai, which was experiencing a dry spell, on Wednesday afternoon. The weather station at Nungambakkam recorded 2 cm of rainfall till 5.30 p.m. Officials of the Meteorological Department said places such as Chennai received rainfall due to convective activity, which usually followed an intense period of heat. S. Balachandran, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Chennai said: “We have to wait for a few more days for the onset of the northeast monsoon. Southerly and westerly winds are still prevailing over the region. Easterly winds that usher in monsoon activity have still not set in properly.” Excess rain The Meteorological Department has announced that conditions are favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon around October 20. Northeast monsoon is likely to arrive thereafter. Though the northeast monsoon is yet to set in over the State, Tamil Nadu has received 12 cm of rainfall, which is 39% in excess of the normal for the period since October 1. Chennai may experience rain or thundershowers in some areas and day temperature will be around 33 degrees Celsius till Friday.
