New Delhi is back in the thick of global geopolitics of things — chairing summits, navigating tricky Manichaean choices, ducking geopolitical whirlwinds, and negotiating a place at the high table of global governance.

The upcoming BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) summit in South Africa, from August 22 to August 24, will be an important stress test for Indian diplomacy, and a harbinger of the shape of geopolitics to come.

BRICS

  • It is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

  • The BRICS countries have a combined GDP of over $20 trillion and a population of over 2.8 billion people.
  • They are also major players in the global commodities market, with significant reserves of oil, gas, and minerals.
  • The BRICS countries have been working together to promote economic cooperation, political dialogue, and cultural exchanges.
  • They have also established a number of financial institutions, such as the BRICS Development Bank and the BRICS Contingent Reserve Arrangement, to support their development goals.

Challenges

The BRICS countries are facing a number of challenges, including

  1. economic slowdown
  2. political instability
  3. climate change

However, they are also working together to address these challenges and to promote a more just and equitable global order.
