Overview:
The Surpur Empire, also known as the Shorapur Principality, was located in the present-day Yadgir district of Karnataka. It was ruled by the Nayak Dynasty, with Raja Venkatappa Nayak as its final ruler.
Historical Background:
- The rulers of the Surpur Empire emerged from the Bedar community, whose name means “hunter” in Kannada. The Bedars rose to power after the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire.
- Raja Venkatappa Nayak, the last ruler of Surpur, is remembered for his resistance against the British East India Company in 1857. He refused to acknowledge their authority, leading to a rebellion.
- The British ultimately captured Surpur, forcing Raja Venkatappa Nayak to flee to Hyderabad.
