Context:
Tuti Island has suffered significant destruction amid the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the past two years.
Geographical Location:
Situated in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, Tuti Island lies at the meeting point of the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers.
Physical Features:
This crescent-shaped island spans about 8 square kilometres and was created through the gradual accumulation of silt deposits.
Demographics:
The island is home to the Tuti community, who are descendants of the Mahas ethnic group, known to have settled there as early as the 15th century.
Environmental Challenges:
- Impact of Climate Change: Disruptions in the natural flooding patterns of the Nile have caused frequent and intense flooding on the island.
- Drought & Desertification: Declining rainfall and rising evaporation levels have accelerated desertification, severely affecting local agriculture and threatening the islanders’ livelihoods.
