Vineyards in Theni hit by rain

Farmers from Uthamapalayam taluk have complained about the huge loss of grapes due to incessant rain for the past two weeks. Revenue and Horticulture officials have taken up survey of the extent of damage faced by the grape farmers. Following complaints that well-ripened grapes on around 200 acres in Odaipatti, Then Palani and Vellaimmalpuram, had suffered extensive damage, Uthamapalayam Tahsildar P. Udayarani inspected a few vineyards in Then Palani. “We inspected few farms today and a team comprising officials from Horticulture and Revenue departments will make a survey of grape farms in the area to gauge the extent of damage,” the Tahsildar said. The incessant showers since August 7 continued till Friday, which resulted in extensive damage to the fruits, she pointed out. Stating that the grapes were in advanced stage of harvesting, he complained that had there been no rain, he could have harvested around 16 tonnes of fruits. “We have incurred a huge loss due to rain. At least 150 small farmers would have lost grapes on some 200 acres,” the farmer rued.
