What is MASLD?

PRELIMS BITS: SCIENCE & TECH

MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) is the reclassification of NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease), focusing on liver fat accumulation due to metabolic dysfunction, such as obesity and diabetes. It aims to reduce stigma by shifting the focus from alcohol-related causes.

Risk Factors
Belly fat increases the risk of MASLD, with rates rising to 50-70% in individuals with obesity or type 2 diabetes. Around 25% of the global population is affected.

Diagnosis
Advances in non-invasive diagnostics like FibroScan, MRI, and blood tests (ALT, AST, GGT) improve MASLD detection. New biomarkers like CK-18 and ELF score are being developed.

Prevention
Dietary changes, including avoiding processed foods and focusing on a balanced diet with whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins, can lower the risk of MASLD.
