‘WhatsApp’s disclosure to CERT-IN lost in jargon’

Sources say the communication had no mention of Pegasus While WhatsApp provided information to CERT-IN, a government agency, in May about the hacking of phones using malware through its messaging platform, the communication was in technical jargon without any mention of Pegasus or the extent of the breach, sources say. Responding to allegations over the breach of privacy of several Indian WhatsApp users using Israeli surveillance software Pegasus, the Facebook-owned messaging company has said that it remains committed to protecting all messages of its users. In a statement, WhatsApp said, “Our highest priority is the privacy and security of WhatsApp users. In May, we quickly resolved a security issue and notified relevant Indian and international government authorities. Since then, we’ve worked to identify targeted users to ask the courts to hold the international spyware firm known as the NSO Group accountable.” “We agree with the Government of India that it’s critical that together we do all we can to protect users from hackers attempting to weaken security,” the company said.
