Context

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari launched the world’s first prototype of the BS 6 Stage II ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle’, developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motor

BS 6 Stage II ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle’

  • The BS 6 Stage II ‘Electrified Flex Fuel Vehicle’ is a prototype vehicle developed by Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
  • It is the world’s first BS 6 (Stage II) flex fuel vehicle, which means it can run on gasoline or ethanol blends of up to 85% ethanol.
  • The flex fuel engine is a gasoline engine that has been modified to run on ethanol blends.
  • This is done by changing the fuel injection system and the ignition timing.
  • The electric powertrain provides additional power and torque, which improves the vehicle’s performance and fuel efficiency.

It offers a number of advantages over traditional gasoline vehicles, including:

  • Reduced emissions: Ethanol is a cleaner-burning fuel than gasoline, which means it produces lower emissions of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
  • Increased fuel efficiency: Ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline, which means it can burn more efficiently in the engine. This can lead to improved fuel economy.
  • Increased energy security: Ethanol is a renewable fuel that can be produced from agricultural crops, such as sugarcane and corn. This makes it a more secure source of energy than gasoline, which is imported from other countries.
