Context:
The National Turmeric Board was inaugurated in Nizamabad, Telangana, to improve turmeric farming, research, and exports in India, fulfilling a long-standing demand.

Turmeric – A herb used for medicinal and culinary purposes, containing curcumin, known for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Uses of Turmeric:

  1. Culinary: Adds flavor, color, and aroma to dishes.
  2. Medicinal: Used for inflammation, immunity, and digestion.
  3. Cosmetic: Found in skincare products for healing.
  4. Industrial: Used in textile dyeing and health products.

Turmeric in India:

  • Position: Largest producer, consumer, and exporter globally.
  • Production (2023-24): 10.74 lakh tonnes (62% of global trade).
  • Varieties: Lakadong (Meghalaya), Alleppey Finger (Kerala), Nizamabad Bulb (Telangana), and more.
  • Climate: Thrives in warm, humid conditions with 1,500 mm rainfall.
  • Exports (2023-24): 1.62 lakh tonnes, worth 226.5 million USD.

National Turmeric Board:

  • Ministry: Ministry of Commerce and Industry
  • Objective: Enhance production, support farmers, improve livelihoods, and boost global exports.
  • Functions: Focus on yield, logistics, supply chains, and awareness of medicinal benefits.

Challenges:

  • Price Volatility: Fluctuating prices (₹10,000–₹18,000 per quintal in 2023).
  • Infrastructure Deficits: Lack of storage and marketing systems.
  • Limited MSP: No guaranteed minimum support price.
  • Climate Sensitivity: Affected by weather changes.
