Context:
The National Turmeric Board was inaugurated in Nizamabad, Telangana, to improve turmeric farming, research, and exports in India, fulfilling a long-standing demand.
Turmeric – A herb used for medicinal and culinary purposes, containing curcumin, known for anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Uses of Turmeric:
- Culinary: Adds flavor, color, and aroma to dishes.
- Medicinal: Used for inflammation, immunity, and digestion.
- Cosmetic: Found in skincare products for healing.
- Industrial: Used in textile dyeing and health products.
Turmeric in India:
- Position: Largest producer, consumer, and exporter globally.
- Production (2023-24): 10.74 lakh tonnes (62% of global trade).
- Varieties: Lakadong (Meghalaya), Alleppey Finger (Kerala), Nizamabad Bulb (Telangana), and more.
- Climate: Thrives in warm, humid conditions with 1,500 mm rainfall.
- Exports (2023-24): 1.62 lakh tonnes, worth 226.5 million USD.

- Climate Sensitivity: Affected by weather changes.
