ANDHRA PRADESH ANNOUNCES MAJOR TOURISM PROJECTS

The Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled two major tourism projects aimed at enhancing the state’s tourism infrastructure. These projects have received significant funding under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment scheme, approved by the Ministry of Tourism.

Key Projects and Funding

  1. Akhanda Godavari Project
    • Funding: ₹98 crore
    • Key Features:
      • Restoration of Havelock Bridge: Once operational for over 100 years, its restoration aims to restore a historic landmark.
      • Transformation of Kadiyam Flower Nurseries: These nurseries will be developed into tourist attractions, boosting the local economy and tourism in the region.
  2. Gandikota Tourism Circuit
    • Funding: ₹79 crore
    • Key Features:
      • Beautification of Gandikota Fort: Known as the “Grand Canyon of India,” the fort and surrounding Erramala hills gorge will be enhanced to attract tourists.
      • Improved Hospitality: Better accommodation and tourist services will be established to ensure a quality visitor experience.

Historical Significance of Gandikota

  • Gandikota has a rich heritage, having been a stronghold for several dynasties, including the Kalyani Chalukyas and Golconda Sultanate.
  • The fort is a fusion of Islamic and local architecture, reflecting its diverse rulers.
  • The Erramala hills gorge adds a dramatic natural landscape, making it a unique tourist destination.

Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme

This initiative, launched in 2020-21, provides 50-year interest-free loans to states to stimulate capital spending and accelerate development projects.

Objectives of the Scheme

  1. Job Creation: By stimulating demand and funding key projects, the scheme aims to generate employment.
  2. Support for Infrastructure Projects: It helps states fulfill their financial contributions for projects like Jal Jeevan Mission and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
  3. Urban Planning and Governance: Incentives for reforms in urban planning and infrastructure are designed to improve state governance and development.
  4. Cultural and Digital Development: Funds also support projects promoting cultural diversity, local products, and the establishment of digital libraries at Panchayat and Ward levels for children and adolescents.
