Libia Lobo Sardesai, a prominent freedom fighter, played a crucial role in Goa’s struggle for independence from Portuguese rule. Her recent recognition with the Padma Shri award highlights her enduring legacy in India’s freedom narrative.

Early Life and Inspiration

  • Born in 1924 in Portuguese-ruled Goa, Libia later moved to Bombay (Mumbai) for her education.
  • Influenced by nationalist ideas during college, she actively joined the Goan liberation movement.
  • The Portuguese suppression of peaceful protests in 1954 solidified her resolve to fight for freedom.

The Underground Radio Station

  • Libia, alongside her husband Vaman Sardesai, set up an underground radio station during heightened Portuguese censorship.
  • Initially called Radio Q, it later became known as Goenche Sodvonecho Awaz (Voice of Goa) and Voz de Liberdade (Voice of Freedom).
  • The broadcasts countered Portuguese propaganda, inspiring Goans to support the freedom movement.

Challenges in Secrecy

  • The radio station operated from dense forests in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
  • Libia and her team worked long hours under dangerous conditions, facing threats from wildlife and Portuguese authorities.

Key Role During Operation Vijay (1961)

  • Libia played a pivotal part in the final days of the liberation movement.
  • On December 17, 1961, she transmitted an important message from the Indian Defence Minister to the Portuguese Governor General, warning of military action.
  • On December 19, 1961, Libia made a historic radio announcement declaring Goa’s freedom from an Indian Air Force plane:

“Today, after 451 years of alien rule, Goa is free.”

Goa’s Integration Timeline Highlights

  • 1947–1951: Diplomatic tensions between India and Portugal began as Goa was declared a Portuguese “overseas province.”
  • 1961: India launched Operation Vijay, culminating in Goa’s liberation on December 19.
