GS3 – Science & Technology

Context:

The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kiltan is set to participate in the upcoming IMDEX Asia 2025.

About IMDEX Asia:

First held in 1997, IMDEX Asia (International Maritime Defence Exhibition) is one of the leading maritime defence events in the Asia-Pacific region. It is held biennially in Singapore and jointly hosted by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS).

The event offers a strategic platform for naval forces, coast guards, and defence industries to display naval hardware, introduce cutting-edge maritime technology, and engage in policy and security dialogue. A key segment of this event is the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC), initiated in 2009, which focuses on maritime safety, awareness, and collaborative approaches to regional security challenges.

INS Kiltan

INS Kiltan is a domestically built anti-submarine warfare (ASW) corvette, the third in the Kamorta-class constructed under Project 28, following INS Kamorta and INS Kadmatt. The ship is named after Kiltan Island, part of the Aminidivi subgroup of the Lakshadweep archipelago.

Construction:

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.

Design and Stealth Features:
  • Utilizes a carbon fibre composite superstructure, which decreases overall weight, reduces radar visibility, and minimizes upkeep.
  • Its design enhances stealth capabilities, improving survivability in hostile environments.
Weaponry:
  • Armed with heavyweight torpedoes, ASW rocket launchers, a 76 mm main gun, and twin 30 mm guns, capable of engaging multiple threats.
  • Equipped with missile decoy systems (Chaff) to improve defensive capabilities.
Sensors and Surveillance Systems:
  • Features the advanced Revathi radar-based Electronic Support Measures (ESM) system.
  • Includes a bow-mounted sonar for effective tracking, detection, and electronic warfare operations.
Planned Upgrades:
  • Future enhancements include the integration of a Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) system to counter aerial threats.
  • Additionally, the ship is expected to be equipped with an ASW-capable helicopter to bolster its operational reach and anti-submarine efficiency.
