Context:

APEDA, in partnership with AgroStar and Kay Bee Exports, successfully carried out India’s first-ever commercial trial shipment of premium pomegranate varieties—Sangola and Bhagwa—to Australia via sea.

Pomegranate Varieties in Focus:

  • Overview: Sangola and Bhagwa are high-quality pomegranate varieties valued for their sweetness, deep red arils, and extended shelf life.
  • Primary Growing Region: Maharashtra’s Solapur region serves as a major cultivation hub due to its favorable agro-climatic conditions.
  • Key Characteristics: These varieties are distinguished by their vibrant red color, soft seeds, high antioxidant content, and rich flavor, making them highly sought after in international markets.

About APEDA:

  • Establishment: Founded in 1986 under the APEDA Act to promote agricultural exports.
  • Governing Body: Operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
  • Objective: Aims to enhance India’s agricultural exports, expand market access, and ensure compliance with global quality standards.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  2. Export Promotion: Supports trade through initiatives like ANARNET, a traceability system.
