GS 3 – GEOGRAPHY 

Names:

  • Tibet: Yarlung Tsangpo.
  • India: Dihang (Arunachal Pradesh), Brahmaputra (Assam).
  • Bangladesh: Jamuna.

Source: Originates from the Chemayungdung Glacier near Mount Kailash in Tibet, separated from Manasarovar Lake by the Mariam La Pass.

Course:

    1. Tibet: Flows through the Tsangpo Valley, receiving tributaries like Raga Tsangpo.
    2. India: Cuts through the Himalayas, entering Arunachal Pradesh as Dihang. Merges with Lohit and Dibang rivers to form the Brahmaputra.
    3. Bangladesh: Joins the Ganga (as Jamuna) to form the Sunderbans delta.

Major Tributaries:

    • Left Bank: Dibang, Lohit, Burhi Dihing, Dhansiri.
    • Right Bank: Subansiri, Manas, Teesta, Kameng.

Dams:

    • Existing: Zam Hydropower Station, operational in China since 2015.
