Context:
- The Union Government has reopened the application window for the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners & LED Lights) till October 14, 2025.
- The decision was taken citing market growth and industry confidence generated by the success of earlier rounds.
About the Scheme:
- Launched: April 2021, under the Union Cabinet approval.
- Objective:
- To boost manufacturing of Air Conditioners (ACs) and LED light components.
- Reduce import dependency by encouraging domestic production of components not manufactured in sufficient quantities in India.
- Who can apply:
- Both new applicants and existing beneficiaries willing to invest more.
- Current Status:
- 83 applicants with a committed investment of ₹10,406 crore already selected as beneficiaries.
Expected Outcomes:
- Increased domestic manufacturing of AC and LED components.
- Development of the complete value chain within India, including critical components currently not produced in sufficient quantity.
- Enhanced investment appetite in the white goods sector.
Significance:
- Supports Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan by reducing import dependence.
- Generates employment opportunities and strengthens the electronics & manufacturing ecosystem.
- Promotes sustainable growth in the white goods sector.
