Fungal Disease Threatens Endangered Tree in Western Ghats

GS3 – Agriculture

Context

A new fungal disease has been detected, endangering Dipterocarpus bourdillonii, a critically endangered tree species endemic to the Western Ghats.

About the Disease:
  • Caused by Corynespora cassiicola, a highly aggressive and widespread fungal pathogen.
  • Known to infect over 530 plant species globally, including rubber, soybean, tomato, and cotton.
  • Thrives in warm and humid climates and spreads through conidia spores dispersed by wind, water, or human activity.
  • Disrupts photosynthesis, causing leaf spots, target spots, and eventually blight, leading to defoliation, reduced productivity, and plant death.
About Dipterocarpus bourdillonii:
  • Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with fewer than 250 mature individuals remaining globally.
  • Ecological Role: Crucial for rainforest canopy integrity and supports forest biodiversity.
  • Economic Use:
    • Hardwood valued for construction and premium furniture.
    • Oleoresin (wood oil) is used in traditional medicine and industrial applications.
