GS3: SCIENCE & TECH

The Human Rated Launch Vehicle Mark-3 (HLVM3) is an upgraded version of ISRO’s LVM3 rocket, specifically designed to carry astronauts for the Gaganyaan mission, India’s first crewed spaceflight program.

Key Features of HLVM3:

  • Payload Capacity: Approximately 10 tonnes to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
  • Dimensions: 53 meters in height and weighing 640 tonnes.
  • Design Enhancements: The HLVM3 has been reconfigured to meet human safety requirements, including the integration of a Crew Escape System (CES). This system is designed to eject the crew module from the rocket in case of an emergency after liftoff.

Recent Developments:

  • As of December 18, 2024, ISRO has commenced the assembly of the HLVM3 for the Gaganyaan mission’s first uncrewed flight.
  • The first major phase of the HLVM3 assembly was completed on December 18, 2024, at ISRO’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR.

The Gaganyaan mission aims to demonstrate ISRO’s capability to send humans into space and bring them back safely.
