The Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology announced that an indigenous AI model could be ready within six months. The Minister also launched a call for proposals under the India AI Mission, inviting startups, researchers, and entrepreneurs to develop foundational AI models using Indian datasets.
Features of the Indian AI Model
- Graphics Processing Units (GPUs): Initially launched with 10,000 GPUs, with plans to expand to 18,693 GPUs.
- GPU: A specialized processor capable of processing multiple data pieces simultaneously, useful for machine learning and video editing.
- Cost-Effective: Computation costs will be less than 100 rupees per hour after a 40% government subsidy, compared to global models costing 2.5 to 3 dollars per hour.
- Multidimensional Usages: Scalable and impactful AI solutions across sectors like healthcare, education, agriculture, climate, and governance.
Need for Indigenous AI Models
- Boosting Innovation and Research: Achieving global standards and addressing unique Indian challenges.
- Focus on Ethical AI: Prioritizing inclusivity, fairness, and eliminating biases.
- Strengthening Digital Sovereignty: Enhancing control over digital infrastructure and the AI supply chain.
- Security and Data Protection: Implementing AI bias mitigation, explainable AI frameworks, and AI privacy strategies.
Indian Initiatives to Develop Indigenous AI Models
- IndiaAI Mission: Strengthening the AI innovation ecosystem.
- IndiaAI Safety Institute: Addressing AI risks and safety challenges.
- IndiaAI Innovation Centre: Developing and deploying large multimodal models (LMMs) and domain-specific foundational models.
