G3 3 – ENVIRONMENT

Context: The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (Darjeeling Zoo) has established India’s first wildlife biobank in collaboration with the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB).

What is a Biobank?

  • A biobank is a specialized repository that collects, preserves, and manages biological samples such as blood, cells, tissues, DNA, and reproductive materials (gametes) for research and conservation.
  • Used in genomic research, drug development, disease studies, and personalized medicine.
  • Cryogenic Storage: Samples are preserved at -196°C in liquid nitrogen, allowing long-term storage for 40-45 years.

  • Purpose: Supports conservation breeding, genetic research, and future species restoration efforts.
  • Target Species: Focuses on endangered species like red pandas, snow leopards, and Himalayan wolves.
  • Global References: Similar biobanking techniques have helped revive species like the American black-footed ferret and northern one-horned rhino worldwide.
