Context:
India and Mauritius conducted a coordination meeting aboard the INS Sarvekshak to begin a Joint Hydrographic Survey. This ship, operated under the Southern Naval Command, plays a crucial role in mapping and surveying marine environments.
Features of INS Sarvekshak:
- Type: Hydrographic Survey Ship
- Survey Equipment:
- Multi-beam swath echo sounding system
- Side Scan Sonar
- Sound Velocity Profilers
- Fully automated digital surveying and processing system
- Helicopter: The ship carries a Chetak helicopter, which was extensively used during the survey operations.
- Solar Power: In 2017, INS Sarvekshak became the first Indian Navy ship to deploy solar power, replacing its emergency diesel alternator to enhance energy efficiency.
- International Engagement: The ship has been involved in foreign cooperation surveys in countries such as Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles, Tanzania, and Kenya.
Hydrographic Survey:
A hydrographic survey involves the measurement and description of physical features of water bodies, such as oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers. The primary objectives include:
- Mapping Water Bodies: Determining the depth, shape, and underwater features of water bodies, including the seabed.
- Navigation Safety: Identifying hazards such as reefs, rocks, and shipwrecks to ensure safe navigation for vessels.
- Resource Management: Providing critical data for managing marine resources like fisheries, oil, and gas reserves.
