Recently,Ā BiharĀ has decidedĀ to tag greater adjutant storksĀ locally known asĀ āGarudaāĀ withĀ GPS trackersĀ to monitor their movement as part of efforts to conserve them.

- The greater adjutant is a member of theĀ stork family,Ā Ciconiidae.
- There are aboutĀ 20 species in the family.
- They areĀ long-necked large birds.
- Once found across South and Southeast Asia,Ā the Greater Adjutant is one of theĀ most threatened stork species in the world.
- There are only three known breeding grounds ā one inĀ CambodiaĀ and two inĀ India (Assam and Bihar).
- The widespreadĀ destruction and degradationĀ of theĀ wetlandsĀ that this scavenger bird needs to forage (i.e. search for food) and theĀ loss of its nesting trees,Ā led to a decline.

- Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972: Schedule IV
- They are considered theĀ mount of Vishnu, one of Hinduismās prime deities.
- Some worship the bird and call itĀ āGaruda Maharajā (Lord Garuda) or āGuru Garudaā (Great Teacher Garuda).
- They help farmers by killing rats and other farm pests.
