GS – 3 – ENVIRONMENT
Launched in April 2022, Mission Amrit Sarovar aims to combat water scarcity by constructing and rejuvenating 75 ponds per district, totaling 50,000 nationwide. As of January 2025, over 68,000 ponds have been completed, surpassing targets.
Key Objectives & Implementation
The mission focuses on sustainable water sources in rural areas, executed in phases. Phase II emphasizes community participation to ensure long-term sustainability.
Collaboration & Technology
Eight central ministries, including the Ministry of Rural Development, oversee implementation with technical support from BISAG-N. Geospatial technology aids site selection and efficiency.
Progress & Challenges
With over 81,000 ponds identified and 66,000 completed, states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu lead progress. Resource gaps are addressed through MGNREGS and state-specific initiatives.
Community Participation & Future Vision
Local involvement and NGO collaborations enhance ownership. The mission aims to ensure long-term water security, improve livelihoods, and promote sustainable water management.
