GS3: Science & Technology
Context – The Union Minister for Science and Technology has announced the launch of SARAT Version 2, an upgraded tool designed to enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and responsiveness of India’s search-and-rescue (SAR) agencies. The tool offers faster response times and improved visualization capabilities for better decision-making.
What is SARAT Version 2?
- SARAT (Search and Rescue Aid Tool) is a specialized system designed to assist in search-and-rescue operations, primarily within the Indian Ocean region.
- Ministry Oversight: Developed under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and implemented by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
- Primary Objective: Enhancing SAR efforts by providing precise search locations, digital data exports, and advanced visualization features.
Key Features of SARAT Version 2
- Accurate Search Region Mapping: Uses the Last Known Position (LKP) of missing persons or objects to determine precise search areas.
- Exportable Digital Data: Enables seamless integration of search area data into rescue planning maps for efficient coordination.
- Enhanced Visualization Tools:
- Particle trajectory simulations for better tracking.
- Color-coded search regions for clear differentiation.
- LKP markers to refine search accuracy.
- Training & Capacity Building:
- INCOIS organizes workshops and training programs for SAR agencies such as the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Future Upgrades
- Plans to enhance accuracy by incorporating high-frequency radar data and advanced ocean modeling techniques to further refine SAR operations.
