Overview

The Indian Railways has been incorporated into the Mission Amrit Sarovar initiative to support water conservation efforts by developing and restoring ponds and water bodies nationwide.

Railways’ Contribution to Water Conservation
  • Activities Undertaken:
    • Desilting, excavating, and constructing water bodies near railway tracks.
    • Coordination with district authorities and the Ministry of Rural Development for execution.
About Mission Amrit Sarovar

Launch & Objective:

    • Initiated in April 2022, the mission aims to build or rejuvenate 75 water bodies per district to enhance water sustainability.
    • As of October 2024, over 68,000 ponds have been successfully developed.

Key Features:

    • Focuses on long-term water security through community participation.
    • Enhances climate resilience and sustainable water management.

Implementation & Technical Support:

    • Led by the Ministry of Rural Development.
    • The Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N) serves as the technical partner.
    • Executed through the convergence of multiple government schemes, including MGNREGA, 15th Finance Commission Grants, PMKSY, and various state initiatives.

By integrating Indian Railways into Mission Amrit Sarovar, the initiative strengthens water conservation efforts across India, ensuring sustainable water resources through multi-agency collaboration and community-driven participation.
