Key Highlights

Major Drug Seizure

A joint operation by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) seized over 300 kg of methamphetamine, valued at ₹1,800 crore.
Pakistani smugglers dumped the drugs into the Arabian Sea during a mid-sea pursuit.

Smuggling Route and Plan

The drugs originated from Pasni port, Pakistan, intended for mid-sea transfer and delivery to Tamil Nadu. The operation occurred near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) off Gujarat’s Jakhau coast in Kutch.

Drug Details

The seized substance was methamphetamine, known as “ice” or “crystal meth,” a highly addictive synthetic stimulant.

Significance

Maritime trafficking: Exposes the Arabian Sea’s persistent role as a conduit for international drug smuggling.

Coastal vulnerabilities: Underlines the need for robust maritime surveillance near sensitive borders like the IMBL.

Agency collaboration: Highlights successful teamwork between central (ICG) and state (ATS) authorities.

Analysis & Way Forward
  1. Strengthen coastal monitoring with technologies like drones, radars, and satellites, alongside increased patrolling.
  2. Create a specialized maritime narcotics intelligence unit to disrupt smuggling networks.
  3. Foster bilateral maritime security cooperation with countries like Pakistan to curb sea route exploitation.
  4. Promote public awareness and demand-side policies to reduce domestic drug abuse tied to global smuggling.
