Overview
The Africa Energy Summit was recently held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where 12 African nations presented their National Energy Compacts. The event was part of “Mission 300,” an initiative by the World Bank and African Development Bank to electrify 300 million people in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030.
Energy Access Deficits
- Over 600 million Africans lack reliable electricity, representing more than half of the continent’s population.
- Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 80% of the global population without electricity.
- Nigeria faces the largest energy access deficit due to outdated infrastructure and limited financing.
Focus on Clean Cooking
- Around 800 million Africans depend on traditional biomass for cooking, causing deforestation and health hazards.
- Household air pollution leads to over 700,000 premature deaths annually.
- Nigeria targets a 25% annual increase in clean cooking solutions to ensure universal access by 2030.
Commitments by Nations
- Tanzania aims for 75% electricity connectivity by 2030 and 80% clean cooking access by 2034.
- Countries emphasized renewable energy adoption and infrastructure upgrades in their strategies.
Alignment with Global Goals
- The summit’s commitments support UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) for universal, affordable, and reliable energy access by 2030.
- Energy access is vital for poverty reduction, gender equality, and broader development goals.
