GS2 GOVERNANCE:
According to a Crisil Report, India’s yearly wind power capacity additions are projected to double, rising from approximately 3.4 GW in FY 24-25 to around 7.1 GW by FY 26-27.
Wind Energy in India
- Total Installed Capacity: As of January 2025, India’s wind energy capacity has more than doubled in just over ten years, reaching 48.16 GW, placing it fourth globally.
- Role in Renewables: Wind power ranks as the second-largest renewable energy source in India, behind solar power, which exceeds 100 GW.
- High-Potential Regions: States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh show strong wind energy potential.
Efforts to Boost Wind Energy
- National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy (2018): Encourages combined wind and solar projects to improve land efficiency and grid reliability.
- Offshore Wind Energy Policy (2015): Supports offshore wind projects, with promising potential identified along Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts.
- Green Energy Open Access Rules (2022): Simplifies access to renewable energy for consumers, enhancing wind power uptake.
- Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO): Requires power distribution firms to procure a share of their electricity from wind and other renewable sources.
