Lokayukta to recommend wages for residents of destitute homes

He directs tahsildar to grant land for Mangaluru facility
Lokayukta P. Vishwanatha Shetty on Saturday said he will recommend to the State government to pay wages to residents of the homes of the destitute who work, on the lines of paying wages to prisoners in central prisons. He was speaking during a visit to the home for the destitute at Pachchanadi near Mangaluru. Mr. Shetty said the destitute too have a right to lead a decent life. The government pays Rs. 175 a day as wage to prisoners and the same yardstick should be applied to the destitute. Looking at the premises of the Mangaluru destitutes’ home, Mr. Shetty felt the facilities were wanting. He asked the tahsildar to grant sufficient land, around 10 to 15 acres, to the home so that the residents could engage themselves in various vocations, such as agriculture, gardening, handicrafts etc. The home is located on a two-acre campus next to the Pachchanadi dumping yard which holds the city’s garbage. With 150 residents, the home needs an expansive campus for lodging and for allied activities, the Lokayukta said. Mr. Shetty noted that there are 11 homes for the destitute in the State and the one in Bengaluru is in good condition. He inspected the home, kitchen, toilets, kitchen garden and other areas. The Lokayukta also interacted with the residents and heard their grievances. Mangaluru tahsildar Guruprasad, Lokayukta Police Sub-Inspector Bharathi, and others were present.
