The Union Minister recently introduced the Scheme for Strengthening the Medical Device Industry, targeting key areas such as manufacturing, skill development, and support for clinical studies, essential for boosting the industry’s growth and self-sufficiency.

Features of the Five Sub-Schemes

  1. Common Facilities for Medical Device Clusters
    • Focuses on building infrastructure within medical device clusters, including shared resources like R&D labs, design and testing centers, and facilities for animal testing.
  2. Marginal Investment Scheme to Reduce Import Dependence
    • Encourages localized production to reduce reliance on imported raw materials and essential components for medical device manufacturing.
  3. Capacity Building and Skill Development for Medical Devices
    • Aims to strengthen the technical workforce by providing financial support for specialized courses and training programs related to medical devices.
  4. Medical Device Clinical Studies Support Scheme
    • Offers financial support for essential clinical studies, covering animal testing, human trials, and clinical performance assessments to enhance product quality and safety.
  5. Medical Device Promotion Scheme
    • Supports industry associations and export councils in promoting the sector through conferences, studies, and surveys to boost the industry’s global visibility and competitiveness.

Currently valued at approximately $14 billion, India’s medical device market is expected to nearly double and reach $30 billion by 2030, indicating significant growth opportunities.
