GS II-Initiatives
Context:
The Delhi Police has introduced ‘Shishtachar’ squads to combat sexual harassment in public spaces, drawing inspiration from Uttar Pradesh’s ‘Anti-Romeo Squads.’
Key Features of the Initiative
- Team Structure: Each squad is headed by an Inspector and consists of a Sub-Inspector, five male constables, four female constables, and a technical assistant from the Anti-Auto Theft Squad.
- Oversight: The squads operate under the Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) within the Crime Against Women Cell.
- Identification of High-Risk Areas: District DCPs will designate hotspots where women’s safety is most at risk.
- Regular Patrolling: Officers will conduct daily patrols and targeted drives at two strategic locations.
- Surprise Inspections: Plainclothes officers will monitor public transport and intervene in cases of harassment.
Why This Initiative is Needed
- Increasing Crimes Against Women: Delhi has witnessed a surge in cases of rape, molestation, and eve-teasing.
- Law Enforcement Priority: The focus remains on strict legal action rather than moral policing.
- Crime Prevention: Enhanced police visibility in vulnerable areas aims to deter potential offenders.
