It is meant for promoting sports and building infrastructure Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports Rahim Khan said here on Monday that his department has sought Rs. 500 crore from the Congress-Janata Dal(S) coalition government in the State Budget for 2019-20 for sports promotion and to build infrastructure facilities. Speaking to presspersons, he said that four divisions — the coastal region, Bengaluru, North Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka — have been identified for sports promotion. It has been proposed to build sports hostels and stadiums, recruit coaches and provide nutritious food to sportspersons in each division by establishing divisional centres. The fund sought in the budget would be for these activities. The Minister said that the government had proposed to set up a Sports University in the State in the 2018-19 Budget. Now, the proposal is before the Higher Education Department. The government is contemplating establishing the university in Bengaluru. The department has conducted a meeting recently to stop permitting exhibitions and other activities in sports stadiums. A State-level policy is required to realise it, he added. The Minister said that the State government is yet to release Rs. 5 crore for providing incentives to talented sportspersons and achievers. It is expected to be released in another fortnight.
