Why in News?
The recent Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) Report highlights that school enrolment has remained steady at approximately 26 crore students.
What is UDISE+?
- Full Form: Unified District Information System for Education Plus.
- Objective: One of the largest Management Information Systems (MIS) aimed at streamlining school-level data collection.
- Purpose:
- Facilitate online data uploads at the school level with inbuilt validation.
- Enable data verification at block, district, and state levels.
- Promote a unified system for educational data, embodying the concept of “One Nation, One Database.”

- Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSE&L) under the Ministry of Education (MoE).
Key Features
- UDISE+ Code: Unique identification code assigned to recognized schools upon state/UT recommendation.
- Data Scope: Captures over 60 data fields for each student, including voluntary collection of Aadhaar details.
- Unique Educational ID (EID): A separate identifier for every student in the UDISE+ portal, covering all children nationwide.
India’s School Education System
- Scale:
- Schools: Over 1.47 million.
- Teachers: 9.8 million.
- Students: 248 million from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
UDISE+ Report 2023-2024
- Cutoff Date: Data compiled as of March 31, 2024.
- Alignment: Complies with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, focusing on individual student-level data for the first time.
- Coverage:
- Includes all states and UTs except Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, which feed bulk data into the portal via their own MIS systems.
- Over 19.7 crore students voluntarily provided Aadhaar numbers.
Enrolment Data
- Total Enrolment: 24.8 crore students, a decrease of 1 crore compared to 2018-19.
- Gender Impact: Enrolment dropped for both boys and girls.
- Regional Trends:
- States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra witnessed the largest declines in student enrolment.

- Data Reliability: Provides an extensive and validated database for educational planning.
- Policy Support: Aids in monitoring and implementing NEP 2020 reforms.
- Inclusivity: Covers students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, fostering equitable education policies.
