Why in the News?
The Prime Minister is set to inaugurate the Z-Morh Tunnel on January 13, 2025, a project that began in 2018.
Overview: The Z-Morh Tunnel, named after the Z-shaped stretch it replaces, is located between Gagangir and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir. It will provide all-weather connectivity to Sonamarg, a popular tourist destination.
Features:
- Length: 6.5 km
- Structure: Two-lane road tunnel with a modified horseshoe shape (7.5 m) and a D-shaped ventilation tunnel (8.3 m)
- Travel Time: The tunnel reduces the travel time from hours to just 15 minutes.
Significance:
This strategic tunnel will facilitate better military logistics, boost tourism, and promote local employment and economic growth in the region. It will also enhance connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh.
