Republicans expand Senate majority

With their Florida victory, they now have 52 seats; Mississippi will see a run-off

Bill Nelson, incumbent Democrat Senator from Florida, conceded the Senaterace to his Republican opponent, Governor Rick Scott, on Sunday afternoon after a prolonged and bitterly fought battle. A Statewide manual recount of votes left Mr. Nelson, a three-term Senator, lagging by 10,033 votes out of a total of 8.19 million votes cast. Last week, the elections for the senatorial race had to be electronically recounted across the State, resulting in a margin of less than 0.25%, or 12,603 votes, sending the race into a manual recount. Like his fellow Democrat, gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum who conceded on Saturday to Republican Ron DeSantis, Mr. Nelson’s messaging was that every vote had to be counted. Florida, the U.S.’s largest swing State, is among those that has seen contentious battles over voter disenfranchisement — a process that has disproportionately affected racial minorities and people on low incomes. Republicans and President Donald Trump had made accusations of voter fraud without providing supporting evidence. “We must end all forms of voter suppression, make it easier for Americans to vote and honour the idea that we are governed by the majority and not the minority,” Mr. Nelson said in his speech. With the Florida victory, Republicans have another seat to add to their Senate majority. This is besides Mississippi, where the race will go to a run-off on November 27. Winning this seat will give the Republicans a Senate majority of 53- 47.
