Cyclone Fengal

Cyclone Fengal recently made landfall near Puducherry. It developed due to a weather disturbance that intensified into a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The name “Fengal” is of Arabic origin and was proposed by Saudi Arabia.

Cyclone Naming Process
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has divided the world’s oceans into distinct basins and designated regional bodies to oversee the naming of cyclones. Globally, there are six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) and five Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs) responsible for issuing advisories and naming tropical cyclones.
For the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, the India Meteorological Department (RSMC New Delhi) is tasked with naming cyclones.
